Eriks Lip Repair

Erik had his lip repair surgery on August 5th. It is never easy to see your children go in for surgery, even though, the end result is always for the best!

Here is Erik with the nurse who was about to take his to the operating room, the hardest part of the day! Watching them walk down the hallway, hearing my baby boy cry the entire time!

Here he is in recovery! His lip looks amazing!

Today Leah and I were playing with Erik, smiling at him and in return he would giggle and smile back! I told Leah that his surgery was next week and I was going to miss his 'wide smile'. She didn't really understand what I meant, asking if he wouldn't be able to smile anymore, or if his mouth would be different. I explained that right now when he smiles, it is huge and contagious! Literally takes up his whole face! There is going to be a change after his surgery because the cleft will be sewn together. Leah went on about how she is going to miss his smile as well, and even told Grandma on the phone tonight how she was going to miss Erik's wide smile! It made me smile, made me proud of my girl who is learning compassion through her brother who looks a little different, yet loves the things about him that make him different!

I know that all kids ask questions and always make comments about people who look different. It made me sad when a little boy at the pool said that Erik looked gross. I am glad that his smile is going to be 'put back together', but I am going to miss it, and I am always sad that people are ignorant and will continue to be ignorant, especially when it comes to adults and the quality of life my children will have. Do they seriously think that my kids cannot and will not have a 'normal' functioning life because they look a little different. It pisses me off and I am hoping I can teach my children compassion and love towards others so they will be able to look past the differences and get to know the person for who they really are and not only for what they look like. I guess the greatest way I will be able to teach them is if I convey that myself.

This wasn't meant to be a rant tonight, but I guess that is what came about!

I have realized that other than facebook, I have no records of the babies growth and development. When they are older I am going to have to search old facebook pages searching for mildstones and growth records!!

This makes me sad. Not only becuase the twins are my last babies, but because I don't want them to think that I didn't care!

July 25th 2010 Stats!

Erik James

age: 4 months 2 weeks old

weight 13 lbs 6oz

Erik is eating anywhere from 7-8oz each feed! I feel like he eats so much, but I think it is because he sleeps so much that he eats when he can!! He is sleeping 12-13 hrs in a row at night! I love that no matter what time he goes to sleep at night, anywhere from 7-9, he will be out until the morning. Plus he usually has one super long nap during the day, 5-6 hrs, and maybe a cat nap or two. We are able to put him to sleep awake and he will fall asleep on his own, the times he doesn't just fall asleep we know there is something wrong, either needing to eat more or have his bum changed. He is a happy baby who is always smiling and happy! He loves to suck on his fingers and is always trying to stick as many of them into his mouth as he possibly can. He loves to watch people and has started grabbing for toys or people, or anything he sees. I must admit, I am slightly worried about his lip repair coming up on Aug 5th, because all of this may change. I put him to sleep on his tummy (ya ya I know) and he sucks his fingers. After his lip repair he will have to wear arm restraints and won't be able to sleep on his tummy. I know that we will get through it, we did with Caidy, but that is what I think about!

My baby girl is growing like crazy! She is my chunky monkey who started out so small, 4lbs 14oz, and has grown to be my biggest baby girl! She is very scheduled and structured. Olivia is eating 5 oz at every feed and takes her bottles every 3-4 hrs like clockwork. She has been putting herself to sleep for months now, sucks her thumb and prefers to be put down in her crib rather than cuddled to sleep. There are times I find myself missing her, or wanting to cuddle because she is so self suffcient! Olivia has the most beautiful smile, but does not give it away easily! She reminds me so much of Leah who would scowl at everyone, kind of choosing who she was going to smile at. Olivia loves to lay on a blanket kicking and looking around, she will look at toys, but doesn't grab yet. It is awesome to listen to her babble away and yesterday started blowing raspberries. It is so cute listening to her making noises, talking away! She is also very demanding, if she is hungry she wants it now, although she won't eat her milk cold, so she has to wait while it is warmed up!

I feel tired today, not that I have any reason to be. The babies have been sleeping well, they are both averaging 7-10 hrs in a row. Plus when they wake, usually between 6 and 7am they will go right back down for 3-4 hrs. I have nothing to complain about... just feel tired! I want my hair cut and a pedicure!! HA those are the last things that are going to happen with fathers day this weekend, James and Elijah are going camping, leaving me home with 4 kids ALONE!!! AHHHH
It will be good, though. I am excited for James to be able to relax, I have been going to Jazzercises for a couple weeks now, that is my out!!

Thats all... not very exciting, just tired!

Erik Update

Erik James is already 3 months old! It is so hard to believe time is passing so quickly. He is a very happy baby who loves to sleep!! A mothers dream ;)

Every three weeks we are having appts in Vancouver at an orthodontist for the mouth piece he wears. You can see it in his mouth here, the purpose of the plate is to bring the cleft closer together so when they do his palate surgery at 9 months the 'hole' won't be as big. In the picture you can also see the nose stint that is attatched to the plate. This is to stretch the nostril up, making it look more uniform with the other nostril. We are also taping his lip, the tape pulls the skin together, stretching it so there is more to work with. I am finding it very hard to believe that next month he will be having his lip surgery already! He will look so different, it is kind of bitter sweet, I will miss his wide smile, but look forward to seeing his smile together! :)

Few and Far Between

I know, I know. I have been awful at updating about the babies. Life has been so busy, I never feel like I can just take a minute and think of something clever and witty to write. James is constantly on my case to update and write, but I always think of some excuse as to why I can't.

So today I will! Not only because I can't think of an excuse as to why not, but also because I don't want the twins to think their childhood was negative. It has been busy and chaotic, and a complete whirl wind, but not bad and not anything that we regret.

I want to write about our large family. We do have a very large family now and although it is crazy busy at times and the kids may feel like they aren't getting the one on one attention that they were used to before, this is good. WHY you may ask could something that sounds so negative be good.

For me it is because we are teaching our kids to be self-less. Not only have James and I learnt this, or are constantly having to learn it daily. We are having to put our own desires and wants aside for these two little ones who are totally worth it!

I remember seeing a family with two older daughters that had adopted a set of toddler twins. At first I felt so sorry for the girls, how they were missing out on their teen years having to now help take care of these younger children. I thought how I would react, saying no, fighting my parents to have to do anything. BUT then I got to know these girls. They are the most thoughtful, caring, giving people I had ever met. They were able to put others before themselves, think beyond their own selfish desires and love people for who they were, rather than what they were able to get out of the relationship.

Seeing this family made me realize I wanted a larger family. (ok I wanted 4 kids! But will gladly accept the 5 given!) Not only are my children growing up with an attitude of 'its not about me', but they are learning the importance of giving rather than receiving. Of putting others before yourself, and even if you don't want to do something you have to do it!!

Now, please don't think these lessons are coming easy. In fact it is the hardest thing any of us here have had to learn. I have had to put my desires on hold, James has had to give up so much to help with the babies. There is never a moment that we are both able to have time to ourselves. We are always on. The kids have had to learn that if they want something, they have to wait, or if not willing to wait they have to go without.

Our house has been in a constant state of change these last 12 weeks and I pray that it would continue to change us for the better. That whatever we are supposed to be learning when our whole house is in chaos and both James and I want to step away, but are unable to; will give us strength and help us be better people.

It was great to celebrate Caidy's 4th birthday! She was so excited and spent days before hand making lists with Leah about what she wanted at her birthday! All in all it was great, she was spoiled rotten and loved by so many people! I am so proud of my baby girl and so excited about the beautiful, witty, fun loving girl she is growing into!!

Well here I am at 33 weeks! Crazy to think about how quickly this pregnancy is going by. I had an ultra sound today and the tech measured the babies femurs, stomachs and head circumference to estimate their sizes. I was shocked at how big they are already! Baby A, our girl, is estimated at 4 lbs 10 oz. Our baby B, the boy, is estimated at 5 lbs 8 oz!! That is huge! Not only am I carrying the 10 lbs of baby, each placenta is 2 lbs, there is most likely 2-4 of fluid, so 18 lbs in my stomach alone and the rest of the 27 lbs I have gained is all in my face! :)
I am getting very excited for them to make their appearance, although I still have so much to do to prepare. I still haven't gotten the shelves or dresser to house the babies clothes. This has been a 3-4 week battle with every idea of mine being ruined by either time or our own stupidity! We bought what we thought was a dresser from Costco, only to find out we only bought the drawers! Who does that!! I think both James and I have pregnancy brain! Then the shelves for the closet are being made by a friend of ours and I think we regretted to inform our single guy friend that you need to have things ready BEFORE the babies arrive and not whenever it suits you! ;)
I think other than those minor things we will be ready! On monday I have an appt with my OB to talk about a birth plan and maybe if I need to stay in the Vancouver area until these little ones decide to make an appearance. I am really struggling with not being able to have things planned out. I always knew I was a control freak, of sorts, but this is pushing me way to far! I really feel like a fool for having nothing planned, and as soon as I think I do, something happens to throw all the plans out the window! Hmmm maybe a lesson to be learnt there, not sure! ;)

Healing Nicely

On Saturday night all of the scars on Caidys lip and nose fell off while she was sleeping! She woke up so excited, saying proudly "Jesus healed me!" I asked her to pose for a picture for me where I could see how nice her lip looked and this is what I got!!

Here are her and Elijah just posing for the camera! His bottom two teeth are very lose and it will be quite an exciting day when they fall out.

Hopefully we will be on here updating more often and soon I will have to post belly pictures! It is crazy how much this twin pregnancy is different than my singlton ones!

Caidys Lip and Nose Revision Surgery

It has been a very long time since this blog was updated, but we thought since we began it as a way for Caidy to look back and see all she has been through we would continue it. She went in for surgery on January 18th to have her lip and nose re-done, known as a revision.

She was an amazing little girl through the entire ordeal. The day of she wasn't allowed to eat or drink for 8 hrs prior to her surgery and since that was at 1pm she wasn't able to eat breakfast or lunch. By the time we arrived at the hosital James and I were starving, Caidy on the other hand was happy! She allowed the nurses to take her vitals; blood pressure, temperature, weight, and heart beat, with no fussing at all.

She sat in the waiting room and played, sharing her toys, waiting patiently for the surgery to start, which ended up not staring until 2 in the afternoon. When it was time for her to finally go into surgery, she laughed at me in my scrubs! You would have never known she hadn't eaten all day or was just about to undergo surgery!

When we arrived in the operating room, she was a total champ! Talking to all the drs and nurses, telling them how her mom was going to have "5 KIDS!!" She had them all laughing and while she was blowing bubbles they were able to do her IV without her even flintching. I left the room proud of my baby girl, in no way worried that she wouldn't come out perfectly fine with her winning additude!

After the surgery, which lasted about 2 hrs, the Plastic Surgeon came out telling us she did great. He was able to take quite a bit of scar tissue from her lip and cartalige out of her nose. He was very impressed with the results and we were anxious to see her!

Once Caidy started to wake up we had to stay in the recovery room longer than expected. Her poor tummy was quite upset from the anasthetic, causing her to get sick. I had no way to get ahold of James when I was in the recovery room as he had been emailing everyone to tell them Caidy was out of surgery when the nurse came to get me. The poor guy had to sit in the waiting room with a dead cell phone until one of the nurses finally asked him what he was still doing there!! By this time we were already up in our room wondering where in the world James was! He finally made it and we were able to be with Caidy as she woke up, she was given gravol via her IV which totally knocked her out.

Our stay in the hospital was great. Caidy was constantly making me proud, she is such an amazingly compassionate 3 year old! The next day the nurses were just as impressed with her recovery and we were able to go home that morning. As soon as she had her IV taken out we went for a walk and were able to play in the toy room until Uncle Jason, Auntie Cheryl and Alexander were able to take us back to Grandma and Grandpa Wilsons house.

Since we have been home she has been healing well and having a great aditude. The only problem has been, of course, an accidental kick to the nose!!! How in the world she was able to get kicked in the face after reconstructive surgery is beyond us!! I am hopeful there will be no damage to the work the plastic surgeon did, praying once the swelling goes down she will be fine!!

BIG NEWS!!!

Well, its about time we updated this blog! There has been a big change to our family (Well in about 7months)....

We are expecting TWINS!!! yuppers, you read that right! Jaime and I are very excited and overwhelmed! They are due April sometime!

On Nov 19th Jaime has an ultrasound and we will be able to tell you the sexes!

Please be praying for Jaime as she carries these babies and the babies continue to grow strong and healthy!

My girl decided she was ready to pierce her ears! I was a little surprised when we went into Wal-Mart and she decided she was ready, so we figured why not and let her make this decision on her own! She was such a trooper and didn't shed a single tear! My Leah, the girl who can be anything she wants to be when she wants to be it!! I love this beautiful girl, she is full of spunk and personality, she knows what she likes and what she doesn't. She can be sensitive and quiet, she can speak to Jesus and delights in hearing His voice. She can call to him in times when I don't quite have the words that suffice. She trusts him already and knows he is always there. It is amazing seeing her relationship with Jesus grow and seeing the look on her face when he speaks. I love teaching her and being taught. She is an amazing and I am honored to be her mom!

I love this little man way too much! There is something about the relationship between a mother and her son that I would have never understood before I had my own! Elijah is thoughtful, caring, kind, very sensitive. He loves sports, he is completative, but still allows his sisters to win! He cares deeply for others and is able to put others before himself. He has hugs that melt your heart and make you feel loved and welcome by only the smile on his face. This little guy is already sensitive to Jesus and I am excited to see him grow in his love.

I love this silly beautiful girl so much! She brings so much joy to our family and I can't imagine her any other way. She is always amazing us with the new things she is learning and all God is teaching us through her.
She is strong because of her differences and they are something James and I are teaching her to embrace; not hide, change or cover up. She is perfect the way Jesus made her and we are striving to show her that, as well as rid people of their ignorance concerning the ways she is different.

Everyone was in such a good mood tonight I decided to get the camera out, it has been such a long time since I have. I really need to practice more and learn how to use my camera, there is so much I could be doing with it but I really have no idea how! I also have a great editting program that I have no idea how to use. I am really bad at reading manuals and figuring things out for myself, I would so much rather have someone show me step by step how to do everything!!
Here are the kids tickling eachothers necks while I am trying to get a good picture! And I was playing doll tonight and cut Leahs hair!! No I am not a hair dresser and I have no training, but I do think, all things considered, it turned out pretty cute!!! My sister is a hair dresser and I think it would be something I would like to do someday, so I practice on my kids and husband! I have actually been cutting James' hair for the past 6 years!! And I think he still looks hot! HA

A year behind us and a new one just begun

YA, so maybe I should leave those little poems in my head, but it is a new year, so why not share!! I must admit I am really excited about this new year. I feel like there are going to be big changes, I feel like I am ready to take on new challenges and spend some time listening to what God has planned for our family. 2007 was the first year since James and I have been married that I haven't been pregnant or having a baby, and I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! I am not sure what 2008 will bring, but I am excited to start a new chapter in our lives.

Caidy has been quite slow progressing in her speech, we meet with a Speech Pathologist weekly and she, along with our cleft clinic SP, think she may need surgery on her palate again to tighten up the muscles. I have been reluctantly agreeing with them, reasons being they know more than I do and she is a little nasally. Then this morning she said Dada clear as day!!! I was so excited! Leah and I started repeating it over and over and she joined right in! I am not sure if this means she won't need the surgery, but I do know she needs her ear tubes replaced and with that she may be able to say more because she will be able to hear more. Exciting times ahead.

We have been in the house for over a week now, things are getting back to normal and it is great for everyone to have their own space. I am amazed at how well the kids play, I was getting quite discouraged by the amount of TV being watched in the Motel, but realistically there was nothing to do but that in such a small space. It is nice to know that all the TV hasn't ruined their ability to play and use their imaginations. ( I will get pictures up eventually, but I am still waiting on a hutch that our friend is making us for the kitchen.)

Well since this blog is supposed to be about the kids, I will reluctantly stop babbling and show some Christmas pictures!!

James and I set up Elijah's race track so it was already for him to play with Christmas morning. He was so disappointed to wake up and see that Santa had opened his present and played with it first!!

Our sad little tree that James and I bought on our very first Christmas! We did have a great family from the Church bring us a gorgeous real tree, but every single tree stand was sold out in town and we had to resort to our old faithful!

Elijah loves music and knowing this, Grandma and Grandpa West bought him his first keyboard!

I think we are all starting to go a little crazy in this room. The kids are acting super hyper and not like themselves at all. James and I are a little more on edge than usual, and everything feels kind of off.

I really wish I had something to update on, but there is really nothing going on. Life in the motel is getting really old and I think every single person I talked to at Church today asked when our house would be finished! Neither James or I have the personality to hound the contractor and demand that work get finished, and seriously I am not sure if it would even help! I think on any given day there may be only one guy working on the house, and for that reason alone I can't expect it to be finished any quicker. I may have to go and take some pictures this week so I can see the progress and get some encouragement!

In other news I have some great ideas for Christmas pictures this year, so hopefully the snow will come!

The kids are all doing well.

~Leah has started her home reading and is really enjoying her version of reading the books! A combination of memorizing words and looking at pictures! Its a start and it is really exciting to actually hear her sound out a word!!

~Elijah is totally obsessed with the Cars movie. Since the Motel room is so small, he unfortunately has gotten pretty spoiled with being able to watch an abnormal amount of TV and Cars is the movie of choice 9 times out of 10! James, being a slightly passionate guy (insert sarcasm here!) has started buying him the hot wheels characters from the movie and I hate to admit he almost has them all. The rest will be arriving in the mail this week, via e-bay. (James was able to get a box of 20 characters for a pretty good price!) So Dad if we have any duplicates, you will be getting the extras!!

~ Caidy is doing well. Her personality has really come out and she is a blast! She always has us laughing and wants to be the center of attention, be it positive or negative! In the nursery at Church she is already getting pretty aggressive, trying to steal every ones snacks taking all the toys for her own! Although she is quite tough, she can hold her own and is super sweet and gently at the same time! She has been napping in a bed and will be moving into her big girl bed once we get into the house! She does so well and lays right down, says nigh nigh and closes her eyes before I leave the room!! I thank God daily for such amazing sleepers. To think we have all 3 kids in the same room, Leah and Elijah in the same bed, Caidy less that 1 foot away in the play pen, with all of them having the same bed time and they sleep great! Thank you Jesus!!!

Although mommy is not too fond of the new hair cut, I am not going to say anything negative about it to my beautiful girl who thinks she looks like a new woman!! She loves her bangs and I know for myself I need to use this as an opportunity to build up Leah with the knowledge that she doesn't need to have perfect hair or clothes or anything else materialistic to make her who she is. I want to challenge all of you to do the same as well, please help us raise our girls to not care about clothes, or hair, but to be concerned about who they are in Christ.

Our Flood

If you are wondering why there haven't been too many updates lately, it is because on Sept 22nd our house flooded! We went to Kelowna for the weekend, a Youth Retreat, and received a phone call that our house was flooding and they thought the water had been running for quite a while! It was the toilet in the upstairs bathroom that caused the damage, the little hose that connects the wall to the toilet burst.

This was the reason our neighbours called the city and had the water turned off!

Here is the inside, kitchen and dining room. You can see how the water moved things on the floor, and also the hole in the flooring is where we removed a wall when we first moved in. I am not sure where the pail of water came from, but I am pretty sure we left no pails around before we left.

Here is the ceiling in the living room/kitchen.dining room. We had scraped off all the popcorn stuff because it was ugly and then were waiting for an electrician to come before we re-painted. We were told that if the water would have ran for only an hour more the ceiling would have fallen and all of our furniture would have been damaged.

This is a door jam in the basement and I was shocked to see how high the water actually got, or maybe it was how much water the wood absorbed. I am not sure. We have wood panelling in the rec room in the basement and unfortunately they are not tearing it down, I am not sure if it just doesn't absorb water or if it is such crappy stuff you can't wreck it!!

Here is the main level of the house today. They are almost completely done re-drywalling everything and we are hoping the mudding will be finished this week.

These are the upstairs bedrooms. They only had to remove 2 feet worth of drywall on all the upstairs walls.
Since the house flooded we have been living in a Motel! We are really trying to keep life as normal as possible, but lately it has proven really hard. We can't blame the kids at all for being a little crazy, James and I ourselves are going nuts! We are hoping to be back into the house at the start of December, but I guess with construction you never really know!!

Dentist Trouble

A couple weeks ago Leah was complaining that her tooth hurt, sure enough there was a cavity. I took her to the dentist and we had trouble getting her to take an x-ray. The Dr told us that he may have to send her to Kelowna (pediatric dentist) depending on how bad the cavity is, but he would try first. We went back today and Leah walked in great, was super excited to see everyone, allowed them to put a little freezing gel on her gums and then started FREAKING out when he tried to freeze her gum! She wasn't just crying, she was sobbing and struggling to breath! I tried to calm her down, but by that point even the dentist had sided with her and decided it would be better to send her to Kelowna where they could give her a mild sedative and possibly knock her out if they have too! I can't believe all this trouble over a little cavity, in no way do I want her to suffer, but I am really struggling where the line is between sucking it up and holding her down, to sending her to someone else. I really felt like if the dentist would have been a little firmer and if they would have let me calm her down she would have been fine. I understand the fact that it may traumatize her, but its gonna happen sooner or later and Leah has the attitude where she fights fights fights and then once it actually happens she will laugh and think it was not too bad. I really do think she needs to learn that it will only hurt for a minute and then it will be fine, but she may be our princess!!

My Caidy girl!! This picture made me laugh so hard when I first saw it! Her hair is AWFUL! I have no idea what to do with it. At one point I cut her little bangs, but now the longer hair falls in front of them, and then I trimmed her mullet, I serioulsy cut 2 inches off the back of her hair.... and now I am left with this! Poker straight, fly away, whispy hair that no matter what I try it looks ridiculous!!! Oh and you have got to love the shiner on her forehead! She recieved that the other night at Bible Study, she was being a dare devil as usual!!! Although she looks like a monkey with that crazy hair, her smile melts my heart every single time I see it, and as long as she stays so silly there is no way I could ever trade her in because of her hair! HA HA HA

Our lives will now officially revolve around the school year again! Leah started Kindergarten this week. Crazy how time flies! She was super excited on Tuesday to bring in her school supplies, meet her teacher again, and get familiar with her classroom. Then today was her first full morning. She had a bit of a hard time once we got home. I think it was a mixture of being overwhelmed, a little tired and perhaps unsure of what was next. After she had some time to relax and settle down she was ready to talk about her day and was really excited. I know she is ready for tomorrow, she was excited when she went to bed, and couldn't stop talking about how next week she will be there for a full 4 days!!

OHHH OHHHH I may have a solution to my stroller situation. The Child Resource and Referral Center in town has a program where you can borrow baby gear and toys for only $25 a year. I went there today and asked about strollers and they actually have a triple stroller that I can borrow for as long as I need it!! Isn't that hilarious! instead of hiking around with 100 lbs of kids squished into a dual stroller I can have them sitting pretty in a triple!!!

Caidy Girl

Caidy has been such a little monkey lately! She is at the best age and I feel like I could just play with her all day! I trimmed her bangs today, they were getting so long and always in her eyes (they look crooked because I only cut a very small amount and the longer pieces have fallen forward!).

Here she is in her favorite spot, right at the bottom of the stair sitting beside her favorite baby doll. We have a gate, but it is used more as a car door (Leah and Elijah's favorite place to play as well!). She had to have this doll in particular during one of our many trips to Wal-mart, as soon as she saw it she held on tight and would not put it down. Actually screamed when we had to pay for it!

And her infamous glare! I am not sure where she learnt this look from, but she is always doing it! She looks at you kind of inquisitively, like she is just trying to figure it all out!!

I am really loving this age, I feel like I can't even remember Leah and Elijah being 17 months... most likely because Leah was only 18 months old when Elijah was born, and I was already 5 months pregnant with Caidy when Elijah was 17 months old!!! HOLA did we ever have them close!!! But serioulsy I would never change a thing and would do it all again in a heart beat!!

Walking

A good friend and I have been walking a couple days a week. She drives over to my house and we go about 2 km over to the park, let the kids play, and walk home. I thought about blogging this because of all the people who laughed at me and my stroller situation!! I have a dual stroller, kind of like this, only 2nd hand (which I am NOT complaining about) and well used. I make it work by having Caidy in the front, Leah in the back seat, and Elijah sits underneath in the storage basket!! We call it his own special boys hide-out spot!!

I have really never thought too much about it one way or another, until people laughed that they had no idea Elijah was even there, or until they saw me squeeze 3 kids into it!!

I have considered getting a jogging stroller, kind of like this, and just have Leah or Elijah sit in the front on the foot rest. But really would it just be harder to push and maneuver around??

HMMMM the puzzling things that consume your mind as a stay at home mom!!!

Camping Trip

Last week was James' week off and we took the kids camping for a night. It was great, we were only about 1/2 an hour away from Grand Forks and totally roughing it. We had no electricity, no water, and only a little make shift outhouse. That may sound the opposite of a vacation, but it was wonderful! We were the only ones there, no one around to have to be quiet for. We were able to build some great fires and stay up quite late talking and spending some great quality time together with no distractions, and the kids absolutely loved it! It reminded me of Family Reunions in Sask at my Great Grandmas house, the only difference was there are absolutely no mosquito's or grass hoppers (great memories of one jumping into Kims shirt! ewwwww)

Jersey Land Dairy

This morning we went to Jersey Land Dairy, an Organic Dairy farm in Grand Forks. The kids loved the petting zoo, mainly goats and miniature ponies, but were very impressed. Caidy would squat down, she is now walking all over the place, and look. While Elijah liked them animals from a distance. Leah was right in there, saying that if she stopped petting the pony it would be sad!!

WHEN WILL THIS HEAT END??!!

I am getting really tired of the heat!

Of course I could handle it when it nicely cooled off at night, but when the house is feeling hotter at night than it did during the day, I can't hack it!

Last night Leah and I slept in the basement on the hide-a-bed, but poor daddy had to fight the heat as well as ELijah and Caidy.

They are saying it will be 40 or more on Friday, ummmm ya.

Powder Room

I am so happy that 1 room in the house is now FINISHED!!! I finally hung up some decorations to pull everything together and the Powder Room is done. From my earlier post you may remember me saying that even after we finished painting the countertop we had to redo it because of the verithane, and then after the 2nd time painting we went out and bought the right verithane and there are STILL yellow spots!! AHHHHH!!! I guess it is just the paint reacting and we will never get a true white counter, but at least I now am comfortable enough to show pictures!!

Summer Fun

I love having Raspberry bushes in the back yard, between James and the kids it has been a fight to be able to have enough, but today I was able to get out their early enough ... to make a delicious fresh Raspberry Cheesecake!!
And then today Elijah and Leah thought it would be fun to have a mud-fight while I was busy picking. They have been told so many times to not play in the mud, but this was ridiculous!!
I think Leah was trying to pose so that you couldn't see all the mud that was thrown on her back and down her legs...
And finally to end the crazy day, Elijah playing in the ball pit we bought for his birthday from Great Grandma and Grandpa Johnson.
As much as I love the summer and being able to play outside, I am beginning to notice it is way more work than any other Season. Between loads of laundry after the beach, or playing in the yard and, of course, mud fights. My days are getting longer and longer as the summer progresses. I am really glad, though, that here is cools off so nice in the evenings, that by the time the kids actually fall to sleep James and I can sit outside and relax. I really love the patio furniture we picked out and am loving the time we spend enjoying it!!

It is hard to believer that my baby boy is 3! Elijah is such a great little guy, he is sweet, kind and a little shy! He is crazy at times, doing things that I would have never expected out of a 3 year old and always amazing James and I. He already loves baseball and all sports for that matter. He also is mesmerized with music and we are really excited to maybe get him into guitar lessons in the next year. Elijah is definitely my little monkey and I love him to pieces!!!

I have had 5 people in the last day tell me that I need an update on this blog! Hmmmm I guess I can think of something to tell you all!

I feel like it has been so busy in the last little while and I am really loving it. There was something intimidating about the city for me that kept me cooped up in the house more than I would have liked too be, but here in a smaller town I am loving the feeling of freedom. Although they are over now for the year, I was kept busy during the week with play groups and bible study. Now that summer is here the other moms and I try to get together at least once a week, for our kids and our own sanity! We went up to Christina Lake today with 2 other families and had a great time, the kids loved the water and although I was great about sunscreen for them I am bright red! Oh well, at least they aren't. I am also looking forward to go tubing down the river, everyone spends the day at the river here and am hoping James will give it a try with me!He has never liked swimming, but maybe for me he will :)

We have also been doing tons of Reno's around here. It feels like the more we do, the more doesn't get finished!! Right now we are waiting for an electrician to clean up the mess we made from removing a wall, and once that is done we can paint and finish the island and get counter tops!! We also scraped the old ceiling, WOW that was way more work than I expected, but that also has to wait for the electrician before we can paint and finish! James has been trying to get a couple different guys in here to look, but they are pretty booked up.

I have also been working on the powder room on the main floor. It was dark forest green and AWFUL!! They painted everything from the fan to the outlet covers green. A very big job to clean up, but it was well worth the work and was looking great... Until I decided I wanted to paint the counter top. The old owners had spray painted it, it looked retarded and was super ugly. I painted it with a melamine paint and had just started putting urethane on it when a problem arose. The lady at the store gave me tinted stuff instead of clear, it looked so bad. I tried to sand it off, and got impatient so tried to scrape it and then scraped to the old counter top and now we will have to get an electric sander and sand it all down and start again.... AHHHHH just when I think at least one thing can get finished I have to start again.

The kids are all dong well, Elijah has his 3rd birthday coming up on Sunday, the 8th and James' parents are coming out for the weekend. Leah is loving the sunshine and could spend hours running through the sprinkler. Caidy has almost started walking!! She can take about 5 steps in a row before she starts laughing and falls down, I don't think it will be too much longer, this morning she walked to me without me even having to coax her.

I can't really think of much else to say, we had some professional pictures taken last week from a girlfriend of mine so I will post some of those soon!!

Finally an Update

Sorry it has taken me so long to get this updated, but Caidy really didn't start feeling better until yesterday. It was the last time she puked and she was actually able to drink some milk and eat a couple crackers. (she was having water and pedialite the whole time she was sick)

AND THEN

Today I notice her tummy is looking really swollen, she almost looks bloated. I tried a couple times to sit her on the floor while I had to get something, and she would scream, not like she was just being clingy, but like she was in serious pain. So I called James and he rushed home and we took her in to the ER again. The dr thinks that because of all the puss and infection in her ears, eyes, and nose that it is in her tummy and making her really uncomfortable. I started getting really worried here, but he said that since she is still having regular bowel movements she is able to get it out, but put her on antibiotics anyway, Novo-Trimel, to be exact.

It is really really getting frustrating. She had the tubes put in in Dec and they have been nothing but trouble since. I am so mad that I didn't just decline them in the first place, yes she did have fluid in her ears, but was it really affecting her hearing to the degree of speech and mental delay? I am starting to think not, but I can't blame anyone nor can I blame myself. She has tubes in her ears and they suck, but that is life!! :) I really have to keep reminding myself that in the whole scheme of things that could have gone wrong with her clefts and didn't, to have some ear troubles really isn't too bad.

On a lighter note

We did get possession of the house on Monday and have been trying to make our way over to paint in the evenings, but with all that has been going on with the kids, Leah and Elijah have been sick right along side Caidy, just not as bad, we haven't been over at the house as much as we would have liked. And then last night we got a phone call from a good friend of James' saying he was in town. Since James was over at the house Nathan went over and helped him paint. To top that, he has been at the house ALL DAY today painting all the rooms so they will be move in ready on Saturday!!! THANK YOU JESUS!!! Nathan has been such a huge blessing and it has taken so much stress away to know that the house is still being worked on even amongst all the chaos with the kids!! :)

Update on Caidy

On Friday night both Elijah and Caidy were up all night sick, neither of them could keep anything down till Sunday afternoon. Elijah was feeling a little better in the afternoon so James took him and Leah out to a BBQ. You could tell that this was taking more of a tole on Caidy since her eyes were all pussy and she had a terrible fever. I really wanted to go out as well, so we both thought that the outing would be good for her. As soon as I woke her up she vomited all over and I knew that I just needed to put her back to bed. She hadn't been able to keep any food or liquid down since Friday so I took her to the ER tonight (Sunday) and the dr was concerned as well. He ordered a blood test, because of the fever and puss, but the results proved to be normal for how she was feeling. He was reluctant to put her on antibiotics because he seemed to think this was a viral infection, I questioned him because both Leah and Elijahs' eyes were starting to look a little gooey and puffy tonight. He asked me to bring Caidy back tomorrow morning and he will see how her night went, if she was able to keep down the Pedialite, or plus how her eyes are looking. I am thinking I may just bring Leah and Elijah with me as well so he can look at them at the same time. Please be praying for the kids and us, this is a little frustrating because it feels like everyone was just sick.

Caidy was in a perfect mood after her nap, so I took advantage and grabbed the camera. I have been trying for weeks to get this gorgeous smile in a picture! Finally!

Leah wanted me to take her picture because all the attention Caidy was getting and wanted all of them to be silly!! Elijah didn't want to take a picture, but rather wanted to make his singing debut!! Definitely a Johnny Cash impersonator!

Road Trip Memories

Today we had an ENT (ear nose and throat dr.) appt for Caidy. She lost one of the tubes in March. It went well, the ear that the tube fell out of now has a hole where the tube was, which is good because it is doing what the purpose of the tube is, draining fluid. Although her right ear, which still has the tube, is clogged. So the ear I thought was fine is now the one giving us trouble! We have to use new drops for a week and have a follow up appt in May which will determine if they need to surgically replace the tube. WOW that was a lot of ear talk!!

Other than Caidys appt James and I were really looking forward to a day of shopping in Kelowna, it feels like I never get to shop anymore. And then our day started...

First off Leah has decided that she doesn't like car rides and didn't understand why we couldn't just be there. After only 20 mins of driving we had to stop for a potty break. Ok most likely my fault and I should have pushed her to go a little harder before we left. So I thought being such a great mom I would offer her a drink at the convenience store, she didn't want anything. Which was really weird, usually this would perk her right up, but she was so worked up that nothing was going to make her feel better.

So off we went on our 2 and a bit drive to Kelowna when maybe 15 mins down the road Leah starts crying and getting really worked up and saying her neck is sore. I know from past experience that as soon as she says her neck hurts she is about to be sick. So I ask her if she is going to puke and hand her an empty container, all the while James is yelling that now I have put into her head that she is sick, me being the only reason she would be.... Well 2 seconds later she is puking her guts out and crying and I am yelling at James to pull over, but he is caught up on the "if I wouldn't have said anything she wouldn't be sick" idea and is taking his time.

Oh the joys of kids...

So after the apologies and all the tears are wiped away, and James realizing she would have been sick anyway we are off again. Everyone is happy and we are all singing away to 'High School Musical' when I hear another gag. I then start yelling again for James to pull over, but before he can Caidy has puked all over herself and her car seat. (I left the container on the side of the road for obvious reasons) I have no other clothes for her and no other jacket, I did not come prepared because I had no idea today was going to be puke fest in the van!!! Then because of this we are running late and we have to go to her appt being the way we are, mad tired and smelling of vomit. blah!!!

I think my girls are a little too much like me when it comes to motion sickness. I remember getting sick all over the kitchen floor before a trip even started, thanks to being told to chew gravol!!!

And Leah is a little too much like daddy, making everyone else unhappy because she is! :)

But that is why we love them!! We ended up having a great day and even spoiling ourselves with some new spring clothes.

On another note, James is off to Trail tomorrow to sign the mortgage papers and wanted all of us to go along as well, needless to say I have opted to stay home with the kids to avoid another day like today. We are really excited, though, that moving day is getting closer and we are only a couple steps away from owning our first home!!!

Easter Egg Hunt

We had a great time hunting Easter Eggs today. They had the areas roped off for each age group and no parents were allowed to go in and help.

Leah got right into it and was off running and trying to get the most candy. Elijah needed a little more encouragement and a little push!

Caidys' Appointments and Change

A while ago I told about Caidy's ears and how they have been draining, I initially phoned the ENT and was told by the receptionist that drainage is normal and made an appt at Children's' Hospital for April 20th. I didn't feel right about this, her ears were absolutely disgusting and constantly full of gunk. I phoned back and talked, this time, to the Nurse Practitioner and, of course, drainage like this is NOT normal and I need to get her some ear drops. We have been using the drops for a couple days now and there has been a huge improvement on her ears. Although we have had and used the drops before, they seem to be working better now and actually clearing up the infection.

Now that we are living so much farther from Children's' Hospital, I have been trying to get all Caidys' ENT appts rescheduled for Kelowna so we don't have to make a 1 hr appt into a couple days endeavor. I was so excited today to hear that we have an appt for the 19th in Kelowna. It is amazing how this has taken so much stress away and even in teh everyday things God cares and answers prayer.

April has been such a busy month, not only for the appts, but because James and I have bought our first house!!! We are so excited to get possession April 30th, which of course means more packing, moving and change. Really though, WHO CARES, we are going to finally own our OWN home!!! WHOOOO HOOOOOO Plus we are really excited to be able to put some of our time well spent watching HG TV into practice by remodelling the kitchen and taking down a wall! I can't wait to get my hands dirty and finally, after 6 years, be able to pick out paint colors and decorate my OWN HOME!!!!

Fairmont Hot Springs

We were able to spend a GREAT Spring break with Grandma and Papa Wilson at the Fairmont Hot Springs. We spent Sunday through Thursday on vacation and had a wonderful time. James and I were able to spend time alone, something we haven't been able to do in a while and the kids LOVED spending time with Grandma and Papa. From swimming to playing in the park, to eating out and Bowling this was one of those family vacations that will go down in the recod books as 'The one to top',

New Bikes

Leah and Elijah both recently recieved new BIG Bikes, as they like to call them!! Leah is great at riding hers already, but Elijah is having a bit of trouble getting the hang of it. He wants to learn so bad, and I am sure will be having no trouble at all after a couple more days of practicing!

She didn't really know what to think about her cupcakes, until she realized she could lick her fingers, than there was no stopping her and she was pretty mad at her siblings when I had them get close for a picture!!!

Caidy was a great girl all weekend. We did have a little trouble with her ears though. On the way to Fairmont, we think from the preasure of driving through the mountains, one of her tubes fell out. Then for the rest of the week they were draining. I am giving the ENT a call tomorrow because although there is alot of fluid she apears to be in NO pain at all, and it is not affecting anything she does. I will post a update after we either talk to the dr or go in, whichever they want us to do.

Swimming

One of the favorite activities of the week was swimming, Leah could have been in the pool for the whole week if we would have let her!! She enjoyed getting personal swimming lessons from Grandma and they were there a good couple hours a day!

Caidy wasn't too sure what to think, she loved her bathing suit, posed in the living room, but didn't really like the unsafe feeling of the water. She held on tight and we only stayed in for a couple minutes.

Elijah, a little more like Caidy and his dad, went in the pool to feel the water and wanted out to go back to the park!!! Him and James never went swimming again, actually James didn't at all!! What can you do!!

Leah wanted goggles so bad. She wore them more out of the water than in them!!

Bowling

The highlight, in my mind, of the vacation was bowling!! (look down to the score to know why!!!) We went spontaniously and got the last available lane and ended up having a BLAST. The kids knew all about it from playing the Wii, and were very ready to jump in. We had a great time laughing and letting our competative sides run wild as we all faught for the win!!

I hadn't realized how long it has been since I updated the blog, sorry about that!

The kids are doing great, unfortunately we have all been having some trouble with a stomach bug. First it was Leah, then I was hit, followed by Caidy, and now James seems to be the next victim. I am not sure how it started, where we caught it, or even how to get rid of it (the bleach is all gone and it is still around), but I am sure it will be gone once it runs its course.

Other than that bleak news, we are doing well. Caidy has been doing well, she was seen by a Speech Pathologist last week which was a lot of fun. I didn't realize how little I actually was paying attention to her milestones, life has been so busy it had become a 'if she's playing quiet let her be' kind of mentality. So I have been enjoying spending some quality time with her and getting her talking a bit!

Leah and Elijah are doing well. Leah started a cooking class today called 'Alphabet Soup'! She had such a great time and I think it will be really good for her eating habits. She is definitely our picky eater, but of course they had her making her own grilled cheese sandwich today!!! That wasn't really what I had in mind, her eating all her favorite foods!!! But it was fun none the least.

Elijah is really into sports, it seems more so than usual. He either has a hockey stick, baseball bat, or ball of some sort in his hands at all times. All the time he spends playing has really paid off as well and he is getting really good, especially at baseball where James can pitch and he hit pretty much every ball back.

So that is us in a nut shell right now. I feel like I could write so much more, but where is the line between what to say on a blog and what to continue to pray about and trust that God will answer. So there you have it!!!! My blog full of tidbits about the kids will stay just as that. . .

Caidys' ENT Appointment.

We had to make a special trip to the coast once again this week so Caidy could have the tubes in her ears checked. The ENT said everything was looking great and he would like the tubes to stay in for at least another 6 months to 1 year. I was a little upset when I told him about the ear infection Caidy had a week after the surgery and he told us that it most likely wasn't an infection but the tubes working and draining all the fluid out of her ear!!! I couldn't believe that both James and I missed him telling us this would happen, that the dr we took her to at the ER didn't know this, and that she was on a super strong medication that made her very ill for weeks after. I am glad now that we know this and have a prescription for ear drops if it happens again, oral antibiotics are not as effective as ear drops for fighting the bacteria.

Caidy was also able to get another hearing test preformed. It is a small room where she sits on my knee, having differnt sounds played and if she looks in the direction the sound came from a drum playing monkey will light up as a reward. Caidy did very well this time compared to the hearing test she had before the tubes were put in. The last hearing test the lowest she could hear was 40 decibels, and this time it was as low as 20! Both drs were really impressed with her improvement and because of this she should be making more and more sounds because of all she is now able to hear.

All in all the trip to Childrens Hospital was great and very encouraging!

This is the moring of Caidys' ENT appt. Great Great Grandma Wright made Caidy this poncho and hat for Christmas and she had to wear it just because she looks so adorable in it!!

Leah and Elijah had a blast while James and I were gone for the day. They were able to spend the whole day with Grandma Jolene and I think did every single thing possible they could squeeze into their one day together. They went to Mc Donalds for lunch, to the mall and were spoiled, and of course had to go to the park and play!

This picture of my favorite!! Elijah is such a character right now, every chance he gets he is silly and if he isn't running like a mad man, he is laughing about his 'bunka butt'. We have no idea where it came from, but he his always trying to get people to watch his shake his little behind!! I am trying to think of this as just a phase, hopefully one that doesn't offend too many people!! :)

Well the first visitors to Grand Forks are Papa and Grandma. The kids were very excited to see them again and were able to open up some presents from Christmas. Jaime and I also recieved some presents, one of them was a new webcam! Below are two pictures that we took with it.

Big Girl!

Caidy has really been doing well this past week. I have weaned her off breast milk and am finally finished pumping! I made it past both of my goals and to Caidy's 10 month b-day! It felt good to make it so far, but at the same time I felt a little guilty for not making it to 1 year, but she is doing extremely well on formula, Enfamil A+, and is growing. We took her for her weekly weigh in today and she is up to 16 lbs 11oz, exactly where she was when she first had the surgery, so all the weight she had lost is back and she is eating like crazy so it won't take long for her to get caught up!! Her palate is perfectly healed and her ears are all cleared up, we go back to the ENT at the end of January to check on the tubes, and I am assuming all will be fine. Her lip has also been loosening from all the sucking on her sippy cup and straws, we just need to continue to massage and I am sure it will be looking perfect in no time!!

Bring on 2007

If the past couple days are any indication of what 2007 will be like, I am ready!

Caidy has finally learnt to suck out of a sippy cup!! Yesterday we tried yet again with a new cup (3-4 different ones bought in the past 3 weeks!!) she instantly liked it. At first she would only let us pour it into her mouth, just removed the stopper, and after a couple pours she was sucking away!! At first it was a little messy, but she caught on so fast and now can even do it with the stopper in place! I am so happy, it is amazing how the Dr's have repaired her mouth, to look inside you can't even tell she even had a cleft!! It has been a very long 3.5 weeks, but I am so thankful we can now look back and say to ourselves WE DID IT!!!
